Although the concept of the twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac also exists, in Japan, it is not called the zodiac but is called "干支(えと)", or "stem and branch" (干支). It is said that "Ganji" originated in ancient China and was introduced to Japan around the 3rd to 4th century. 

It is mainly used to indicate the order of days, months, years, times, directions, angles, things, and other quantitative terms. The order of the 12 years in a cycle is exactly the same as Chinese custom, which is as follows: Zi (Rat), U (Ox), Yin (Tiger), Mao (Rabbit), Chen (Dragon), Si (Snake), Wu (Horse), Wei (Goat), Shen (Monkey), You (Tori), Xu (Dog), and Hai (Pig).

Only the Japanese term "sheep" refers exclusively to cotton sheep and does not include other species such as goats, while "pig" refers to wild boars, which is said to be because Japan did not have the habit of raising domestic pigs in the past, and replaced them with wild boars that originally existed in the forests.
